A tough season for the San Diego City College baseball team ended the same way it has for the majority of the year — in a hard-fought loss.
The Knights (8-28, 3-22 PCAC) lost 11-5 to Grossmont College, on Friday, April 25 at Morley Field, ending their season on a six-game losing streak.
The final score was not indicative of City’s fight throughout the game.
The game was tied at one through three innings before Grossmont scored four consecutive runs, ballooning its lead to 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
Knights’ sophomore outfielder Orlando Arellano singled in a run in the fifth and fellow outfielder Anthony Felice tripled him in, closing the gap to 5-3.

Grossmont scored two runs in the sixth, but the Knights resiliently matched that number, making it 7-5 heading into the seventh.
That was the last time the Knights would score. A three-run blast in the ninth inning from Grossmonts’ first baseman Michael Sweeney put the game away for good.
Despite the loss, City College head coach Chris Brown was proud of the fight his team showed in the game and throughout the tough season.
“I love these guys,” Brown said. “A lesser team would have folded probably two weeks ago. I give them all the credit in the world for coming out on a daily basis and putting in the effort.”
Brown had the task of retooling a roster from last season that won 22 games and clinched a playoff spot for the first time since 2010.

The Knights lost five games this season by just one run and were blown out in only three games, showing that they were competitive despite their win-and-loss record.
Brown applauded his team’s positive attitude and desire to get better throughout the tough season.
“Each individual on the team wanted to get better,” Brown said. “They wanted to improve, they wanted to earn it.”
“If you look at the demeanor of our team, you couldn’t tell if we were 3-20 or 20-3. That mentality is something that I’m proud of.”
